It is important to emphasize that these \u201cstandards\u201d are flexible and aim to promote excellent healthcare for our patients, allowing private practice professionals to adjust them as necessary, always documented through informed consent to ensure quality care.<\/p>\n<p>However, in Spain, Law 4\/2023, of February 28, prioritizes gender self-determination, eliminating requirements such as medical or psychological diagnoses or mandatory periods of real-life experience or hormonal therapy to access transition-related treatments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_dd1674d6 height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\" procedures?<\/span><\/span><\/h2><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_a01bbec2 has_text_color\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>In the case of gender-affirming surgery, the following criteria were previously applied based on WPATH recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Well-documented transsexuality.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to make a decision and provide fully informed consent for treatment.<\/li>\n<li>Age of majority in the country.<\/li>\n<li>If medical or psychological problems are present, they should be under reasonable control.<\/li>\n<li>12 months of continuous hormone therapy appropriate to the patient\u2019s gender goal (unless the patient has medical contraindications or is unable or unwilling to take hormones).<\/li>\n<li>12 continuous months of real-life experience in a gender role that is congruent with their gender identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With Law 4\/2023, these requirements have been eliminated in Spain, leaving informed consent as the sole requirement for surgery, respecting the individual\u2019s gender self-determination.<\/p>\n<p>The WPATH recommendations, such as those related to hormone therapy, social transition, and psychological counseling, may still be considered useful for those who wish to follow them but are not mandatory under the current legislation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_c56d5f58 algunos-conceptos height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div left;\">\n<p>During hormone treatment, the trans woman will experience the following changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breast growth<\/li>\n<li>Smoother skin<\/li>\n<li>Decreased body hair<\/li>\n<li>Fat redistribution (giving a feminine contour)<\/li>\n<li>Delay or interruption of the hair loss process<\/li>\n<li>Decreased strength<\/li>\n<li>Reduced fertility<\/li>\n<li>Reduced testicle size<\/li>\n<li>Less firm and frequent erections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WPATH recommends that individuals receive hormone therapy for 12 consecutive months before undergoing gender-affirming surgery (unless there are medical contraindications, or the individual cannot or does not wish to take hormones).<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that after gender-affirming surgery, ongoing hormone therapy is often necessary, albeit at lower doses.<\/p>\n<p>The treatment must be supervised by a specialist to ensure safety and prevent adverse effects, such as liver problems or osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"w-iconbox us_custom_bc1a5739 algunos-conceptos_caja has_text_color iconpos_top style_default color_primary align_center\"><div class=\"w-iconbox-icon\" style=\"font-size:2rem;\"><i class=\"far fa-file\"><\/i><\/div><div left;\">\n<p>Hormone therapy in transgender men typically leads to the following changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A deeper voice.<\/li>\n<li>Increased upper body strength.<\/li>\n<li>Weight gain.<\/li>\n<li>Decrease in adipose tissue around the hips (reduced fat in this area).<\/li>\n<li>Increased facial and body hair.<\/li>\n<li>Male-pattern baldness.<\/li>\n<li>Mild breast atrophy.<\/li>\n<li>Permanent clitoral enlargement.<\/li>\n<li>Increased sexual desire.<\/li>\n<li>Greater capacity for arousal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The maximum effects of hormone therapy may not manifest until one or two years after starting treatment. The response to this treatment depends on the individual\u2019s genetic makeup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"w-iconbox us_custom_bc1a5739 algunos-conceptos_caja has_text_color iconpos_top style_default color_primary align_center\"><div class=\"w-iconbox-icon\" style=\"font-size:2rem;\"><i class=\"far fa-file\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"w-iconbox-meta\"><h3 class=\"w-iconbox-title\" style=\"font-size:14px;\"><strong>Hormone blockers for minors<\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"w-iconbox-text\"><div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>To alleviate the distress that many transgender children may experience when their bodies develop contrary to their gender identity, pharmacological treatment may be recommended. Its purpose is to provide minors with time to decide on their gender identity without irreversible physical changes. However,\u00a0<\/span><strong>psychological support<\/strong><span>\u00a0can be beneficial to accompany transgender individuals through the so-called transition process.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_abd1c771 has_text_color\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>There is no mandatory timeline for this transition process, and each trans person should decide how and when to carry it out, at what pace, and which changes to make.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the process begins when the trans individual feels ready to take the step. Although there is no \u201ccorrect\u201d way or \u201cadequate protocol\u201d to undergo this process, most experience some common social changes, which may include adopting a different style of dress, hairstyle, expression, or presentation, modifying their name and sex on identification documents, undergoing hormone therapy, or having surgical procedures.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_7dcf5242 height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container us_custom_eb849559\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><h2 class=\"w-text us_custom_abc3d2c5 has_text_color\"><span class=\"w-text-h\"><span class=\"w-text-value\">THE PROCESS<\/span><\/span><\/h2><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\" style=\"--columns-gap:5%;\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_62104b76 has_text_color\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>While our society is becoming increasingly aware of trans identities, transitioning can pose challenges, particularly in academic, professional, familial, or social settings. Having familial or social support is crucial for anyone undergoing this process.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, WPATH proposed 12 months of real-life experience as a prerequisite for gender-affirming surgery.
