At IM GENDER we use the term trans as it encompasses both those people who identify with a different sex to the one assigned at birth, transsexual women and men, and those whose gender expression does not coincide with the expectations associated with their assigned sex. There are also those people who may not identify with the terms trans or transsexuality, but simply as men and women who have also been assigned a sex at birth with which they do not identify. Mostly the XY chromosome corresponds to the male and the XX chromosome corresponds to the female. However, there is a very wide diversity with regard to sex: there are women with XY chromosomes and men with XX chromosomes (transsexual or transgender people).<\/p>\n<p>There are also people with three chromosomes at the same time, XXX, XXY, X and with a sexual or reproductive anatomy that cannot be differentiated as male or female (intersex). All this is simply part of human diversity. Sometimes, the sex assigned at birth does not coincide with the person\u2019s gender identity due to the great diversity of possibilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"w-iconbox us_custom_bc1a5739 algunos-conceptos_caja has_text_color iconpos_top style_default color_primary align_center\"><div class=\"w-iconbox-icon\" style=\"font-size:2rem;\"><i class=\"far fa-edit\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"w-iconbox-meta\"><h3 class=\"w-iconbox-title\" style=\"font-size:14px;\">GENDER<\/h3><div class=\"w-iconbox-text\"><p>Gender is the set of social, cultural, political, psychological and legal characteristics that a society assigns to people as belonging to men and women. In other words, it is a socio-cultural construct, which varies throughout history, and refers to the traits that a society attributes to what it considers \u201cfeminine\u201d or \u201cmasculine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Gender binarism is the term that describes a society that divides its citizens into men and women in a strict and exclusive manner. This system contrasts with a society based on gender diversity, in which there is a wide range of gender identities and experiences that does not pigeonhole or exclude other forms.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"w-iconbox us_custom_bc1a5739 algunos-conceptos_caja has_text_color iconpos_top style_default color_primary align_center\"><div class=\"w-iconbox-icon\" style=\"font-size:2rem;\"><i class=\"far fa-user\"><\/i><\/div><div class=\"w-iconbox-meta\"><h3 class=\"w-iconbox-title\" style=\"font-size:14px;\">GENDER IDENTITY<\/h3><div class=\"w-iconbox-text\"><p>These are a person\u2019s inner experiences, private feelings and subjective experiences of their own gender. The term that will now be used is \u201c<em>gender incongruence\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO considers it necessary to continue to maintain the codification of transsexuality\/trans identities within the ICD, in order to meet the health needs that many transgender people are demanding. Although many people do not feel identified under the new term, the step taken by<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>the WHO makes it clear that transsexuality and trans identities are not a disease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_7dcf5242 height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container us_custom_eb849559\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><h2 class=\"w-text us_custom_a4cf53d9 has_text_color\"><span class=\"w-text-h\"><span class=\"w-text-value\">Transsexuality over the years<\/span><\/span><\/h2><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\" style=\"--columns-gap:5%;\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_62104b76 has_text_color\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><strong>Transsexuality and the existence of trans identities have been present in all human cultures<\/strong>. From Neolithic societies to the present day, from the aborigines of Siberia to the American Indians, transsexuality and trans identities were an accepted fact of life and, in most ancient cultures, assimilated by society.<\/p>\n<p>However, after the imposition of European civilisation and the introduction of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>binary concept of male\/female<\/strong>, the different options of gender identity and sexual orientation were pathologised. As a result, transsexuals and homosexuals, among other minorities, were persecuted and punished,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>relegating any manifestation outside the binary to the underground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the homosexual and transgender movement grew in the world, making their situation more visible<\/strong>. This circumstance, together with the emergence of human rights regulations, led to the initial consideration of these divergences as illnesses, which demanded a \u201ccure\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-image us_custom_3fd77211 align_none\"><div class=\"w-image-h\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-1024x493.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"Transexualidad\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-1024x493.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-768x370.jpg 768w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-1080x520.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-1280x616.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-980x472.jpg 980w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad-480x231.jpg 480w, https:\/\/imgender.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-IM-Gender-Capcaleres_transexualidad.jpg 1350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_62104b76 has_text_color\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>Towards the end of the 19th century and up to the beginning of the 20th century, several studies were carried out encompassing the terms we know today as homosexuality, transvestism and transsexuality in what was called \u201csexual inversion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 20th century and its advances<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1923 it was the German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld who developed the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>theory of the third sex or intersex state, which he defined as an intermediate between male and female<\/strong>. However, many of his revolutionary works for the time were destroyed on 6 May 1933 when the Nazis burned libraries and destroyed the Institut f\u00fcr Sexualwissenschaft after their seizure of power.<\/p>\n<p>From the 1950s onwards, the professionals<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Cauldwell and Harry Benjamin<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>made the terms homo\/hetero\/bisexuality, transsexuality, transgenderism and transvestism independent. It was Harry Benjamin who in 1966 wrote the famous book<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Transsexual Phenomenon<\/em>. He thus became the forerunner of the so-called<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>\u201ctripartite therapy\u201d, which he considered ideal for transgender people<\/strong>, alluding to the need for multidisciplinary input in their approach.<\/p>\n<p>This journey, little by little, goes back to where it all began, understanding that despite the fact that attempts have been made to classify trans identities, including transsexuality, as psychiatric illnesses, it makes no sense for them to continue to be there.
