Transsexuality<\/strong>\u00a0is an indisputable part of\u00a0<\/span>human diversity<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a diversity that society has not always accepted and that, unfortunately has sometimes been persecuted, causing great pain. We must get rid of prejudices and for this we need information to understand that transsexuality, like other forms of identity expression, is part of being human.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

What is transsexuality?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>

Transsexuality is an indisputable part of human diversity. At IM GENDER we use the term trans as it encompasses both those people who identify with a different sex to the one assigned at birth, transsexual women and men, and those whose gender expression does not coincide with the expectations associated with their assigned sex. There are also those people who may not identify with the terms trans or transsexuality, but simply as men and women who have also been assigned a sex at birth with which they do not identify. At IM Gender we understand that the range of possibilities within all identities and expressions is very wide and varied.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

SEX<\/h3>

We understand that the definition of a person\u2019s sex goes beyond the visual assessment of their external genitalia at birth as established by the European Court of Human Rights in 2002.<\/p>\n

At birth we are given a sex by the appearance of our sexual anatomy. Mostly the XY chromosome corresponds to the male and the XX chromosome corresponds to the female. However, there is a very wide diversity with regard to sex: there are women with XY chromosomes and men with XX chromosomes (transsexual or transgender people).<\/p>\n

There are also people with three chromosomes at the same time, XXX, XXY, X and with a sexual or reproductive anatomy that cannot be differentiated as male or female (intersex). All this is simply part of human diversity. Sometimes, the sex assigned at birth does not coincide with the person\u2019s gender identity due to the great diversity of possibilities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

GENDER<\/h3>

Gender is the set of social, cultural, political, psychological and legal characteristics that a society assigns to people as belonging to men and women. In other words, it is a socio-cultural construct, which varies throughout history, and refers to the traits that a society attributes to what it considers \u201cfeminine\u201d or \u201cmasculine\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gender binarism is the term that describes a society that divides its citizens into men and women in a strict and exclusive manner. This system contrasts with a society based on gender diversity, in which there is a wide range of gender identities and experiences that does not pigeonhole or exclude other forms.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

GENDER IDENTITY<\/h3>

These are a person\u2019s inner experiences, private feelings and subjective experiences of their own gender. Sometimes this identity does not coincide with the sex assigned at birth because of the appearance of their sexual anatomy.<\/p>\n

At IM Gender we understand that all identities are valid and we welcome the fact that the World Health Organisation has removed transsexuality from the ICD-10 chapter on Mental Illnesses, and that it is now included in the chapter on Sexual Health Conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
